introducing Steve

Born and bred in Nottinghamshire, Steve became interested in cooking at the age of 12. His inspiration came from an uncle who was a chef with the Merchant Navy and would return from long trips abroad with strange gifts and even stranger recipes.


Steve left school and studied catering at Clarendon College. Armed with his shiny new Diploma he began a career in the kitchen and joined teams in high quality restaurants and hotels in Surrey, the Isle of Sark, Gloucester and then Sheffield.


During his time in Australia he cooked many times for the Directors of the Bank of Australia and the Captain of the Bel Air Golf Club in Adelaide before returning to England as Head Chef in a Michelin rated “Spoon and Fork” Gastro pub in North Yorkshire. Feeling the wanderlust again and he took to the high seas as Chef aboard a private yacht cruising the Caribbean and the South Pacific for 4 years.

Steve has been Head Chef here for the last 10 years.

Only fresh and regional ingredients whenever possible. We take care to use award winning suppliers.

We source some of our meats from Yorkshire, our game from local specialist farms, our seafood from the Scottish Highlands, Norfolk and the Ports along the Channel and the rest comes to us as quickly as physically possible from France including some cheeses.
We have an extensive a la carte menu which is always available.
Our Chefs prepare a daily menu to supplement the a la carte from which you can choose 1, 2 or 3 courses.
Each month there will be at least two themed evenings for you to enjoy which range from the classical to the inspired experimental. Chef takes a great deal of pride in showing off his ability on these “special occasions” and we hope that you will try one.

Fabulous evening last night at Number42 Rushtons. The 1st visit for all 6 of our party since new ownship. The food and service was fantastic. We will definitely be returning.



Wonderful food, beautifully executed. The venison was cooked to perfection and I know the people who dined with me were happy with their duck and fillet steak. I ordered the baked alaska for pudding, and my word, it was out of this world. Nothing disappointed on this visit!



This is our favourite restaurant in Newark. Steve & his staff do a superb job of creating delicious exciting fresh food & looking after us whilst we enjoy it …
